Production Meeting Reflection 3
In
this week I was assigned to do a sound volume map, and to add my section onto
the master script. The volume map was just to basically go through every
transition that I could think off, and then say where I could possibly use it,
this helped, gain a better understanding of the sound board, for example, I
learnt the levels of each sound transitions and how they should be competed
with no faults. Then the master script had to say what type of sound will be
used where, so the dialougue, where each bit of music will go.
This
week in my personal opinion I worked well, however with the volume map, I think
I may have taken more time then needed, due to the fact that I was also
learning how each transition would help me with what I’m doing, I done this so I
gained a better understanding of where and a how im going to use each
transition. Although this may have been time consuming, I think it was time
well spent, with this I now have that knowledge and hopefully not make any
mistakes on the live day.
Next week
is our live day, so there’s a lot of preparation that is going to happen building
up to this. So with my task essiantlly being on the live day, I’ll try using my
spare time helping people around and getting more fluent with sound
transitiotns and learning the script.

Production Meeting Reflection - 2
So my task this week as Sound Mixer was to find, suitable Music that could potentially be implemented within the production. To do this it was important for me to make sure that my choices of music worked well with the theme, and was appropriate to the production. To make sure of this, I asked the Director Jasmeet, to give me a sense of direction of what genre and type of music she wanted and what would go well with the whole production.
well I managed to find music and sounds, that the group also agreed too, i had to make sure this was important, as its a group project.
Within the production meeting, people did not like, whistle, so to change that, we as the group decided to get rid of the idea, as we thought it wouldn't work well.
For the next week, i am going to make a sound level script, where ill have a script showing each sound and how loud I want it to be and where i want it to be.
I had Jasmeet, the director, to help me find suitable music, i found this to be very helpful, and it gave me a hindsight of what the group wanted. If i didn't have that i would of went with my own choice of music, which i did, but went with music that i thought would work well.

Ideally the final choice is mine but I wanted to make sure
that I didn’t go off-track, and find music that would be up to everyone’s
liking, so I went with music that was familiar to everyone.
I also made sure they were instrumental, due to the fact they’re
going to be played behind people talking so I dint want it to mix in, that way
it would sound weird.
So the music choices I chose where:
- · Flo Rida – Blow me
- · Olly Murs – Troublemaker
- · Jason Darulo – Trumpets
- · Salena Gomez – Come & Get it
- Kid Ink - show me
- Fancy - iggy
- The vamps - Can we dance
- · A beep sound
- · Ding sound
- · A round of applause
- · A timer
- · An American baseball organ
These are all song we have heard before and I think it will
work really well with the production.
I also go asked to find some sounds that could potentially be
integrated within the production.
And the sounds are:
All these sounds will be used
throughout the production.
Everything will be downloaded
onto an Mp3 format so that way it will be easier for me as sound mixer to put
them in when we need to.

Production meeting reflection 1
As this was our fist production meeting, things started off a bit slow, some of us where more confident in others. Eventually we started off going around the table telling everyone our ideas. What we done was give everyone just a brief run down of what we liked and disliked about each others ideas.
Looking back to my idea, I personally thought the the idea as a whole was okay but could of been improved, with the use of more innovation. There some of my games and content features that I think would of worked really well, for example if we look at my, "Hot seat", idea, I think this would of merged in with the rest of the show nicely. We saw this when I displayed my idea to the group and they really liked it.
In the end, we chose Jada's idea, her show name was called "The Beat", she had some original Idea, due to fact of her content ideas, I personally voted for this idea, because I think it would be good to work wit, and its never been done before.
I really liked her background idea, but I was concerned about the colours she has used, may effect the green screen, because of the black and blue may cause some errors.
We have not really talked about adding things to the idea but at the moment we are still owrking together as a group to make sure its perfect.

Pitch for programming idea
TV Show pitch
For this task we have been asked to plan a Magazine show which will be televised on a daytime TV channel E4, the aim of the show is to display our music videos we created. The show must correlate along side the theme the music video, therefore we will be able to meed our target audiences interests. I will display my idea of how i would want the show to look and in detail how I would want it to look like below. I have gained some inspiration from the Alan Carr show, and Top Gear, these shows seem to flow really well and being at the same age as my target audience, they keep my interested in whats going on.
The name of my show:
The name I cam up with is, "The Tea Note", I used the word "Tea", as a play on word, I spelt it in the terms of a cup of tea, because I want the program to be a weekend morning show, this then works with the note "T" in music so i thought the play on word would work well. The studio set:
I have created a basic studio setup, the reason for this is, I will have my presenter and guest in front of a green screen, looking at it from this point of view, it look rather basic, but from my visual point I currently have, it will look professional, and with my current scheme, which ill talk about further on it will go really well.
THE BACKGROUND
So looking at my background, in this cast the image that will be shown on the green screen, at the moment I've currently got an idea of everything being vibrant and standing out. So what I done is give my logo a bright background, and I think this would be a good idea for the background image, this way people know the show and will be able to identify the logo wherever they see it.
Content Ideas
To break the show up I have divided it into two sections, in each section I will have a different guest, these guest will be the producers of their music video, I will talk more about this when I get to the running order. But for now, in each section I want to have prerecorded content showed.
The current ideas I have for the three prerecorded parts are:
A countdown - This is where our presenter will go through the top 3 music videos of the week, but just to link in with the ideas of our music videos I will have music videos that are similar to the ones that I have chosen, this again is to aim at my target audience to keep them involved and interested in the show.
Hot Seat - This is an idea that I wanted to be shown near the end of the show, the aim of it is, a guest will be sat in a seat and have a 30 second timer to answer as many questions as they can from their fans, these questions will be in the forms of, emails, Text and Tweets.
Presentation styles
The presentation styles will be simple but again vibrant, I wanted to stick to with the black on yellow theme, as you can see like my logo.
I was thinking of maybe having two presenters, one male, and one female, the reason for this is it would appeal to both audiences, AKA males and females. And if we take shows such as "The One Show" and "Friday Download", we see two presenters, from my personal point of view I think the conversation flows better. I would like my presenters to be well spoken and come across with a lot of confidence, their dress sense, would formal but not too plain. Because you have to remember that we are aiming for teenagers and young adults to watch the show. This also brings me to my next point, the grammar I want them to use has to be formal but not to formal, so slag would be appropriate, as its only a breakdown of a modern English term for exam "OMG" is just a breakdown of "Oh My God".
Visual Styles
The amount of Cameras I will have in total will be four, looking again on the image on the left, reason being, I will have the first three cameras in a fixed position like I said, then I will have a fourth camera which will be portable to access other shots. This will keep the audience engaged in whats going on with the show.
Running Order
- Opening sequence - 1 min
- Presenter introduces the show and whats going to happen - 2 mins
- Introduce whats the hot seat is, and explains to fans how they can ask questions to the guests - 1 min
- First guest and music video - 6 mins
- second guest and music video - 6 mins
- Top 3 music videos - 3 mins
- Third guest and music video - 6 mins
- Hot seat - 5 mins

Although having qualifications in Media, Film and TV production and Cinematography may provide additional knowledge.
Duties:
One of the main duties of a camera operator is deciding what camera, lenses and other equipment to use for each section of filming, This requires a knowledge of the equipment in use and what equipment is best suited to the needs of the shoot. Another duty is to help with making the decision on where the final position of the camera should be, this is made easier by understanding how the camera reacts to certain conditions of lighting and the environment. They also have to take responsibility for the 1st and 2nd Camera Assistant as well as the Camera Trainee.
Skills:
Skills:
- Knowing how to operate the equipment safely and proficiently
- Being able to provide creative input
- Having an understanding of all relevant equipment and to be proficient in the use of equipment
Sound mixer
A sound mixer is in charge of the levels of sound, and mixing them so that they are all at reasonable and desired levels. They also control the volume of say, the intro music, so they can fade it out to 0 so that the music is no longer he-arable on the broadcasting footage. They often work throughout the whole piece, and the graphics action is the usual place where they use music and fade it out.
Duties:
The sound mixer, like all roles, will have a set of duties that the candidate or employee must fufill, these are not skills, they are things that have to be done in the job. Failure of a duty is placed upon the candidate, as they should have the skills to cope with them, failure is not an option. The duties of a sound mixer, are as follows...
- They are responsible for mixing sound levels on/at live broadcast transmissions. (They must mix levels, and types of sound to make a stable and desired output, they also control the levels of volume, they choose how loud/quiet individual sounds are, such as treble, mid, and bass, also if they want any sound to be absent, such as the title music.)
- They are to follow directors sound directions, if any. (They must listen to the director, in case of the director asks for certain sound inputs to be activated, like music ques, etc.)
- They are in control of sound dubbing operations. (They must adjust levels of sound within dubs to quire the best sound levels, and smooth sound levels, so people are not to loud or too quiet, or both, but just right.)
- They are to oversee the boom, and other related sound crew members in non live productions. (They are to oversee where the boom and other sound related fish poles, or recording devices are placed, and with some health and safety in concern, also to make sure they are out of shot.)
From looking at these duties, we can see a rough idea of what they are responsible for, therefore giving us an idea of their authority level within the music sector, and the general department. They do have some authority as we can see, as they overview boom members, and the setting up of fish poles, they also need health and safety so that they can tell if a piece of apparatus is in a safe place.
Skills
Skills are important things that you could have learned that would help you become a good candidate for the job, they also tend to help you fulfill certain duties, the skills set is as follows...
- A wide range of knowledge for sound and related equipment. (It is advice you have a strong knowledge on the topic of music and sound related equipment, so you can easily identify, and navigate other employees to do the right thing, quickly using proper terms. Also so that you have a knowledge of how they or so you can easily set them up and maintain them. This helps them in the duty of setting up sound equipment and monitoring levels on sound on them.)
- Knowledge of television production processes. (It is advice that you know ow the studio works, and the processes that happen within it, so you know who you are in command by, and what you should expect, helping you with the duty of listing to orders and fulfilling them.)
- Effective leadership and team working skills. (It is advised that they are extroverted in the sense of group controlling, as they will be overseeing groups of people, they must be able to firmly tell them what is expected and what should happen, this will help when overseeing the boom operator, or the setting up of fish poles and other related sound recording devices.)
- High level of organisation understanding. (They should have a high level of understanding for organisation, so they can easily, control music and sound operations without forgetting about other vital ones, this will help in the duties of overseeing the setting up of fish poles and booms, etc.)
As we can see from the skill set, most of the skills that are advised to have, help you fulfill the duties you would be set as the filler for that job. It also gives you an idea of what to expect, like long working hours, you need the stamina, so you will be expected to work those hours, and then you can think if you really want the job still after looking at the skills and duties, the skills seem to be merely amplifiers so you do your job better.

Lighting Desk
The people at the ligthting desk are quite important, they are in control of the whole lighting for that set, especially when inside.
Like all the others they have certain skills;
- They must have the knowledge of how to handle technical equiptment - They are surrounded by electronics on the lighting desk, they must know how to behave and be responsible around such expensive equiptment.
- They must pay attention to detal and follow instructions - On lighting desks, there are a lot ofbuttons, levers and symbols. The lighting operators must know what each of these do, and must be able to follow instrustions by the director in a short period of time, with the correct precision and detail.
- They must have good colour vision - Not all of the lights and/or buttons are the same colour, they must know what button puts on which colour light so they must have that memory to know which is which aswell as understanding the order of the colours.

What programme formats use multi-camera production?
- Production teams use many different camera formats to record two types broadcasting, these two types are live broadcasting and studio broadcasting. And with these two types of camera production are single-camera, and Multi-camera. I will explain in detail what these types of camera productions are further on.
d However I will be focusing more on Multi-camera, and ill will go through six main genres of TV programming for using Multi-camera;
d However I will be focusing more on Multi-camera, and ill will go through six main genres of TV programming for using Multi-camera;
Live
-Sports
-Concerts
-Public Events
Studio
-Game shows
-Chat shows
-Magazine shows
First of all what is Multi-Camera?
Multi-Camera is used in many types of
production, productions such as, live sport, concerts, public events and more.
But there’s one thing that all of the types of productions have in common, and
that’s to make sure the viewer sees all of the action and misses nothing. The
way production crews assure that this happen, is they have many cameras set up
around the venue where everything within the event can be seen by a camera, this covers things from what the main attraction is to the audiences reactions. The benefits of having a production like this is that you record 100% of the footage and can show the audience the necessary footage. Let me use sports as in example, if we use a mainstream sport channel like, Sky Sports, we often see highlights of live footage of an event that occurred in the day, or in a earlier time period, things like this would be displayed, and when where watching them, we only see the best parts of what happened. and with it being Multi-camera we see audiences reactions, just to build up a picture and emotion, and to also add an atmosphere to whats being shown.
Advantages
- There is more then one view so there is multi choice within the editing.
- It is good for replaying in slow motion with live sports from a range of different angles.
- For spontaneity, if something were to happen unexpectedly, you would have it on camera.
- For speed, you can film more than one scene if a sitcom... and it gets done quicker as you will be most likely to film once.
- For continuity, all the shots are filmed at once so nothing will be out of place or change. You see everything.
Disadvantages
- For certain shots, i.e. Over the shoulder in, for example, Eastenders, you would have to use single camera as you could see the other camera in the background over the other persons shoulder which would ruin the effect fo the scene.
- When filmed in location you would need to carry a lot of equipment and it takes longer to set up that single camera would.
Now i'm going to go through some examples of Multi-camera usage in different types of broadcasting , both practical and aesthetic.
- LIVE SPORT
Practical reasons for this genre to use multi-camera
Practical reasons for this genre to use multi-camera
By using multi-camera for live sport it allows the communication of meaning to the viewer. This is due to the ability to demonstrate various shots of the live game including close up shots of the players, their professional support and their fans. Close up shots of the players and the fans present demonstrate their mood and a long shot of the stadium demonstrate an overall energy to the viewers at home giving them a mood to conform to. As seen below a player has scored a goal and is congratulated by his team member at 0:34. He appears to be exstatic which is also shown through the shot of the crowd at 0:30. This shows the viewers at home that this is a positive moment and makes them feel part of the action.
By using multi-camera to film live sport it maintains the viewers interest. This can be done as both teams have the ability to be shown at the same time with their own reactions and whereabouts. Without multi-camera during live sport it would be impossible to show more than one section of the pitch at one time or during a important event e.g. a goal
From long shots the view of both teams are avaliable at the same time ingaging the viewer to see where both teams are increasing the excitment level. As the game is shot from various areas the viewer is able to see different shots and not one continuous one causing more interest and not bordem.
Aesthetic reasons for this genre to use multi-camera
Location enviroment is a reason for using multi cameras as it shows a large area al at once from differewnt angles. This is importnt during a sports game as it allows both teams supporters to see where their players are and what they are doing at the same moment as another player which may be at the other side of the pitch. By using multi camera we are able to see exactly how big the pitch is and the amount of people present. This gives across a exciting, crazy visual element to the viewers at home. This can also be interpretted by how fast or slow the cameras are panning following particular players.
Multi camera simultaneous recording coverage of action (live and spontaneous) multi camera helps cover all areas therefore nothing is missed e.g. a goal can be shown over and over from different angles as seen in the image below. This creates excitment visually for the viewer s they are able to view the same goal from many angles showing off the players skills and the process to the memorable goal.
- LIVE CONCERT
Practical reasons for this genre to use multi-camera
A practical reason for using multi camera is to capture the visual style and mode of address. During live concerts we are able to capture the facial expressions of beyonce and her body language including dancing. As she speaks we are able to identify the mode of address. This could be calmas when she talks it is mellow. This gives a sence of emotion to the viewer. As it is a live concert, the pans help give across a visual style which could be slow as she speaks and fast as she sings/ dances giving off a calm or feisty mood depending also on the song.
Another practical reason for using multi camera is it communicates meaning to the viewer. By covering various areas of the venue we are able to see both the artist reaction and the crowds reaction. Usually we are shown close ups of certain people demonstrating to all round mood towards what the performer is doing. This si shown in the image below as the girls are all happy are appear tranced by beyonces performance. This mood rubs off on the viewers as they are being giving a sense of the involvement with the event. The live event gives off footage of what is going on at that moment which also creates meaning for the viewer as once again they feel a part of the event although they are not there.
Aesthetic reasons for this genre to use multi-camera
By using multi camera during live concerts you are able to gain a coverage of action. This is a positive aspect as it can visually create and maintain interest of the viewer rather than showing the same peice of action going on from the same angle. By having multi camera we are able to gather shots of Beyonce and the crowd at the same time from differtent angles. The is visually satisfying and creates a sense of creativity for the viewer gainign more interest and excitement rather than boring them. Below there are images of Beyonces live performance and the angles it was shown at for 20 seconds. Each of these angles and shot types make the performance interesting eg close ups, long shots and venue shots.
By using multi camera during beyonces live perfromance we are able to see the constraints of a location enviroment. Below there are some shots which demonstrate what the viewer can see. This allows the coverage of a large area which requires more than one camera to view everything that is occuring at once. The viewers at home are able to feel the scale of the event and the aone artist is having at that very moment on so many people including themselves in one large location and at home. This often creates a mood and an impact.
PUBLIC EVENT - Nelson Mandela's funeral
practical reasoning
The aim of Nelson Mandela's funeral was to show the world how a nation the imprisoned him also loved him, the main aim of broadcasting the funeral was to gain the public and viewers sympathy. if we look at 1:12 we can see his coffin being moved and people crying, this builds up sympathy for the viewers at home, to give them an atmosphere and emotion for the people sitting at home. we can also see that this Multi-camera presented and with a variety of shots we can gain the emotion within the air due to the event that is happening. if we look at the start of the video we can see that there is not a sound being made and just a clear over view into the hills. This again is to outline the intensity and pressure that is there.
Aesthetic reasons for this genre to use multi-camera
When we go from 1:20 to around the 2:00 mark we manage to see around 40 shots, what this does is keep the viewer locked on to what their watching, this also changes the scenery from the walk to the arena, and this again does not cause bordem for the viewer and keeps them encouraged in what they're watching.
STUDIO GAME SHOW- HOLE IN THE WALL
Practical
Game shows use Multi-camera to cover the action, games shows are particular fast pace and involve some sort of activity. In this case Multi-camera is necessary as there is a lot of action to cover. Covering the action is the main reason for Multi-camera for example if the show were to only use a single camera, they could miss some of the action as they may want to film footage of the audiences reaction of the presenters.
In Hole In the wall, they use the camera's for different area's in the studio such as covering the:
- Presenter Long shot
- Present Mid-shot
- Presenter Close-up
- Guests/Participators Long-shot
- Team 1 Long shot/Mid-shot
- Team 2 Long shot/Mid shot
- Game zone area Long shot and close up
As you can see there are many area's to cover and so this is why Multi-camera is used. Multi-camera is also used in games shows is to make the footage spontaneous and live. As some studio game shows are live, they must capture all the action to avoid missing a spontaneous moment which will be hard to capture again. Also the video syncs well and can be edited easier as it was all shot at the same time. If it was single camera, they would have to shoot the show from different scenes and it would mean repeating the same thing.
Aesthetic
Aesthetic Reasons for using Multi-camera in game shows is to make the clip more entertaining, interesting and to make the clip more creative for the viewers. Using different shots and camera angles makes a clip more interesting as their is more going on and it has more of a meaning to it. As I have listed above what they focus on, this is to cover the action and give the viewers more to watch.
Also Multi-camera communicates to the viewer based on the cuts and camera language. From the clip this is done by for example when a task is finished, they will cut to the audience or team to show their reaction and this communicates to the viewers watching on how they should react and feel about that particular moment.
In this video we see different Celebrity's participating in the game show. Individually or in teams they try to create the shape of the wall to pass through it without breaking or falling in the water behind them. If they successfully pass through the wall, they award their team points. From the points above it shows they post replays for entertainment in slow motion so the audience can see the clip better.

We are able to as an example view what both of them are wearing to establish what kind of show it is and whether the moods meant to be crazy or calm. By the look of it they appear to be in a crazy mood. Multi cameras allow us to see both of their reactions at the same time which helps us understand the characters better. Another reason multi camera is need is as when Rihanna in in a seperate rooma nad she walks out onto the show we are able to see her entereing and the people in the other rooms reactions. This included things she has recently done eg. been on the tub, the way she dances, whether she has competition with any other artists and what artists she does like. Whilst both people are talking , pictures are also shown so the view presented to the audience is not consistant and boring. By asking Rihanna questions about her love life and which artists she has competition with it gains viewers intrest as people are her fans and want to know as much as they can about her. STUDIO TALENT SHOW- The Voice UK
Practical reasons for using multi camera
Practical reasons for using multi camera include communicating meaning to the viewer. By using more than one camera we are able to gather the reactions of the person singing and the judges at the same moment. This is shown when the singer sings and will.i.am and jessie j begin to cry. This creates a communication between the show and the viewers as they begin to feel sorry for the judges and excited for the person singing as they appear to be a break through.
Another reason for using multi camera during talent shows is it maintaining viewers interest. As we are able to see both the contestant and the judges. During this show there is a twist of the judges not being able to see the act however we can. Intrest is maintained as their backs are turned and they are unaware of what they look like. This appears to be exciting and different everytime some new comes on as we want to see how the judges react.

Aesthetic reasons for using multi camera
By using multi camera during talent shows you are able to gain a coverage of action. We are able to see the judges, their reactions whilst someone is singing, the singer and the crowd. This presents a good coverage of action as we are able to see everything happening at the same time. An example is when william is deciding whether to press his button or not and the singer is waiting in antisipation. This is shown in the shot below.
Another positive aesthetic reason for using multi camera is it allows simultaneous recording coverage of action. This can be spontainious eg. when will.i.am does finally press his button and everyone gets excited. This is considered to be a exciting moment however it is important that the viewers also experience this. This was possible due to multi cameras.
